i only smoke when i drink

kristen hosted us in style as usual. as the sausage browned and deglazed and simmered and simmered we drank wine and conversed outside in the fog/drizzle alternating between the umbrella and the heat lamp. I'm going to start marketing SF as a "cold spa". we'll set up relaxation suites in the outer richmond where you can let the cold moist air replenish your skin and re-hydrate your liver. just like TB victims of yore traveled to the southwest for its dry air, the modern set will flock to the sunset for its magnificent rejuvenate effects.

I brought gretchen out to meet steve and kristen. Chris brought his friend Sebastian, who we had all independently noticed hanging down in glen park on our way in.

I realized that all my friends smoke. i don't know when it came back into fashion. but we are all dedicated in our own ways. of course, i only smoke when i drink, but that seems to be a lot lately. Sebastian out smoked us all with his pipe and tobacco. Smelling the open tobacco tin actually made my mouth water. strange how non-food items can do that.

couldn't agree more

i think i'm going to pick up a brush again, I've been trying to learn to play an instrument again, but I'm tired of hearing myself squeak though the scales. painting sounds easier.

Lena's house

I'm way behind on my posting, still trying to catch up from last weekend. too many pictures.
Spent last Sunday evening with Kristin and Steve at Lena's house party. Met some new faces, barbecued some oysters, ate some great food and learned simplicity. Karen put together a salad that tasted of its ingredients, and only its ingredients, I liked the combo of freshly pickled fennel root and toasted pine nuts. Got kicked out by the grownups before midnight, went dancing at Amnesia with K and K and S, and then desert. Got kicked out by the kids at 3:33, a fortuitous hour, and cabbed it back to Steve's for some much needed rest.

more glamming it up for the camera.
more dancing. I like Kristin's music selection. Steve thinks its a little loud, and that his neighbors don't approve. Kristin doesn't care. Kristin likes it loud. Steve closes the windows. Kristin turns it up. We all dance. I'm with Kristin.
more hats.

The lighter thief. This picture almost deserves its own blog entry. Steve has pledged to steal every lighter he comes across. Here he is displaying his recent haul. Not bad for a nights work.

Tala and Thomas came over, and Vic arrived from the airport.
This is my second event with Tala and you can see that we are already in-sync.

Never made it to Nopalita, finally accepted that we weren't going out and ordered from Marcello's on Castro. Much better pizza than Nizario's, but the scene isn't as cool.
Thomas and I concur that pepperoni and mushroom is the perfect combination. There's something about the base earthiness of the mushrooms that mellows and lengthens the oil and spice of the pepperoni.
More dancing and then home to Stinson before one.

rocking it at rockwood

Started memorial day weekend off with a bang at Steve's house.
I got his call as I was headed through the city to Stinson, stopped by for a quick drink, and the promise of a little Nopalito. Ended up having so much fun that we never left the living room. Eventually the rest of the party came to us.
Its a rare event when you connect completely with everyone in the room, and this was one of those nights for me. It felt like a big event, but it was really just a small group of old friends enjoying each other's company. Loved the colors Sue was sporting, pink, fuschia and yellow on black.

Steve has always been a little metro, it started with shoes, then clothes, and now that he's had some time off he's really had the opportunity to blossom. Kristin is of course applying her famous touch, bringing it all together and the place looks awesome. I especially liked the recently acquired 80's amp. big analog meters are back.

as the sun went down the girls started to have a little fun with it. The camera brings out the glam in everyone, but especially this crowd. I think we are all a little vain around the 50mm.

note to Leo: Kristin serves an awesome penne with fresh herbs

Leo, my best advice to you is that you involve kristin in the design
of the restaurant and it's menu. I think she has a great sense of
straightforward elegance, and can cook a mean penne.

I think female input on the design is really important. Steve says you should get Annette involved too.

take her out to lunch.

Ciao!

Here's my recollection of the delicious penne Kristin prepared for us post RadioHead (your results may vary). In retrospect this 2pm dinner provided the fuel for my subsequent session. The peppers helped my gut convert over imbibed tequila into the vibrancy required to surf heaving barrels (see previous post).

Fresh herb penne (Scagliotti hot)
1/4 cup Finely cut Italian parsley and oregano
1/2 cup sun dried tomatoes in oil
2 cups halved cherry tomatoes
1/4 cups minched shallot
1/3 cup olive oil
2 tablespoons pepper flakes
1/2 cup shredded hard cheese, Parmesan?
1 package penne.
Salt, Pepper to taste

Heat oil, add shallots and tomatoes, herbs and sundried toms. Salt and
pepper. Throw in the penne. Mix, add a little cheese, and brown. Add
some pepper flakes, simmer and move to plate. Garnish with more cheese
and peppers.

unfortunately I didn't have the foresight to photograph the meal, but suffice to say, it looked beautiful with the reds, greens, and whites glistening in olive oil.
