la Carreta, Miami International

If you find yourself trapped in concourse D (american airlines) of Miami international and need something to eat or just plain want to kill some time check out la Carreta. Cuban style cafeteria food = comfort for the weary traveler. Also, nice booth seating in the back. stretch out, relax, take a load off....

saline panorama

KenC was kind enough to stitch together this pano of the view from saline's first peak.
The original was 51154 x 4924 (too big to open in PS). I cut it down to a manageable 20000 x 1925 using lightroom.
Be sure to down load the full size pano and open it up in preview.app to get the full effect.

grenville

after the hike we were famished, drove over to grenville for some food and a tour of the town. These pictures don't do it justice. it was friday afternoon and everybody was out doing their shopping or just getting a buzz on in preparation for the weekend.

seven sisters

Once we got to the pass, we parked and hiked down into the valley to the first and second of the seven sisters.

we decided to push on to try to find the other sisters, lots of bouldering up a stream bed with embankments too steep and overgrown with ferns and vines to give much relief. felt like charlie sheen waling up that riverbed in platoon.

eventually dorte and enzo found this hole and decided it was good enough. Marcus and i kept on going, until it started to rain, at which point we beat a hasty retreat lest we become part of the jungle.

more flora

the interior was lush enough that these plants were growing semi-wild by the entrance to the falls.

mango sampler

its mango season in grenada, so I've been tasting all the different varieties, The best so far are the dark green ones, they are almost citrus in their tangy flavor. Everything here has a different name than back in the states, but they call the green ones julius. I think I ate 10 at this sitting. Dorte helped me out a little, but she's more partial to papayas.

after sunset took the dinghy into st george and dined at BBs. had the salted fish balls followed by the avocado and pineapple salad. The ribs marcus ordered were amazing.

saline peaks

dorte and i decided to go hike saline's peaks, packed up lots of water and a little snack and set out on foot. Not quite as lush as frigate, but beautiful just the same.
we had to pick our way upslope through thickets of cactus and poison sumack, basically whatever the goats won't eat.
the first peak was amazing, with a 360 view of white, carriacou, union, petit st vincent, and petit st martinique to the north, and frigate, large, il du rhonde, and grenada to the south.
lots of sunblock and a t-shirt didn't save me from getting burned.

second peak was snack, and a slight detour around a cactus barricade.
third peak found dorte sitting on a wobbly rock on the edge of 500ft precipice overlooking frigate, large, and grenada in the background.
the hike down was easier going, higher up natural bonsai sculpted by the wind and sun, and as we got lower trees full of epiphytes and vines.
took the long way back around the salt marsh and finally to the lizzy for lunch.

saline

woke up early and sailed around the windward side of carriacou headed for saline and white. pulled in behind the reef at saline and anchored in beautiful sand. caught a barracuda on the way down. I'm guessing the name comes from the salt flats which were harvested at some point. there's a large kiln built out of stone, apparently to burn coral for cement? downwind is white island.

petit saint?

woke up early and sailed to petit st martinique, decided to anchor off of petit st vincent instead. changed our flag since we were now in st vincent grenadines, just by crossing the channel.
this private island hosts a four star luxury resort for the famous and those who want to pretend they are famous.
Dorte and i dinghied around the island looking for a suitable reef, but they are all dead here. between the hurricanes of the last few years, which have reduced the coral to battered hunks on the sea floor, and the strangely warm water that brings algae, most of the snorkeling depth reefs are lifeless. depressing.

went over to petit st martinique for some shopping and a sundowner at the local bar. this was the main drag. most of the business here is smuggling or remitances sent back from the US.
