We are getting better at traveling. Some of us still stress about getting our boards on the plane, and seat assignments, and connections, but by and large its now all routine.
Pack the night before, Wake up, Put the boards on the car, Go to the airport, Pray that the checker doesn't  count the boards, Smile and pay the board bag fee, Get on the plane, Goto sleep, Wake up in a foreign land and time zone (groggy but functional), Someone rents the car while the other waits for the bags, Load the boards in the car, Navigate to the surf spot, eat, sleep, its all automatic.

of note:
The French are civilized, they don't make you take off your shoes for the security checkpoints and their security girls are friendly.
CDG is a mess, Terminal 2G is a little airport unto itself.
The rest of the world loves Obama, I hope they send in their absentee ballots.
A coke in france is five dollars.
You aren't allowed to take pictures of european air travel infrastructure.
The Bilbao airport reminds me of something my dad would have designed if he was into pre-stressed concrete. A marvel of glass and huge over hangs.

Lust For Life

So, here I am hanging out with Iggy Pop in the Paris airport. Should I say that again? Here I am hanging out with Iggy Pop at CDG.

Ben Fay turned me on to Iggy Pop, Sophmore year of college. Raw power, Lust For Life, Sixteen, Tonight, The Passenger;  changed my life forever. Eventually saw Iggy live at the Warfield with Katie and Cole about ten years ago. We threw Katie up on stage for Sixteen (too apropos) and she danced that song and the next to cheers from the crowd. They wouldn't let Cole on stage, the bouncer put it simply; 'you're too big', and we understood exactly what he meant.

Flashforward to 2008; Lewis and I are waiting for our flight to Bilbao and up the escalator comes old five foot one escorted by a brunette who's easily a full foot taller than him. He's wearing his glasses so its hard to tell who he is at first. Pretty soon he's rolling around on the floor doing his exercises, stretching out for the next leg of his flight. Lewis had me go over and take a picture with him. He was gracious, I was speechless. All I could say was how I was a childhood fan and that he should 'keep on rocking'. Which in retrospect are two things he probably doesn't need to hear from a guy who's well past thirty himself.

Tonight, by Iggy Pop and David Bowie

I saw my baby

She was turning blue

Oh, I knew that soon, her

Young life was through

And so I got down on my knees

Down by her bed

And these are the words

To her I said

Everything will be all right, Tonight

Everything will be all right, Tonight

No one moves

No one talks

No one thinks

No one walks, Tonight

Everyone will be all right, Tonight

Everyone will be all right, Tonight

No one moves

No one talks

No one thinks

No one walks, Tonight, Tonight

I am gonna love her to the end

I am gonna love her to the end

I will love her 'til I die

I will see her in the sky...Tonight
