la Carreta, Miami International

If you find yourself trapped in concourse D (american airlines) of Miami international and need something to eat or just plain want to kill some time check out la Carreta. Cuban style cafeteria food = comfort for the weary traveler. Also, nice booth seating in the back. stretch out, relax, take a load off....

mango sampler

its mango season in grenada, so I've been tasting all the different varieties, The best so far are the dark green ones, they are almost citrus in their tangy flavor. Everything here has a different name than back in the states, but they call the green ones julius. I think I ate 10 at this sitting. Dorte helped me out a little, but she's more partial to papayas.

after sunset took the dinghy into st george and dined at BBs. had the salted fish balls followed by the avocado and pineapple salad. The ribs marcus ordered were amazing.

bovine excellence

Went out to Bill's ranch to photograph some cattle for Adam. Its quite amazing to be around these animals. You expect them to break a leg as their more than 1000 pounds bounds rather sprightly around the field, but they seem to pull it off.
If you can't tell, this is what a happy cow looks like. Bill assures us that there is only one bad day on the farm.

sardines

I realized the reason Jasmine and I get along so well is that we like the same kind of food. Dinner the other night consisted of white wine, kippered herring, smoked oysters, crackers and some overly ripe blue cheese served on a platter in the garden. With my other friends I would have had to consider their likes and dislikes, with Jasmine its never a problem. I can be my smelly fish loving self around her.
I thought I was so alone in this world, but it turns out there are other like minded souls. J forwarded me this link to Gabby and Jon's sardine blog. I especially like Jon's little can-opener/sardine-spade device, need to get me one.

lobster roll

Walked up over Liberty hill, taking the back alleys, views and steps to the woodhouse fish co.
the Lobster roll was amazing with salad instead of fries. Incredibly tender chopped lobster in a cream and chive sauce on a custom bun. The bun was somehow buttery, toasted and squishy all at the same time, making it sweet and juicy, sopping with the lobster's cream. Order the mega for two.
The stuffed artichoke or handmade onion rings looked good too. Didn't make it past the lobster roll.
Came back for oysters after finding Mecca shuttered (huh?). the north points were better.
Look, one stop shopping, family and adult films.

i only smoke when i drink

kristen hosted us in style as usual. as the sausage browned and deglazed and simmered and simmered we drank wine and conversed outside in the fog/drizzle alternating between the umbrella and the heat lamp. I'm going to start marketing SF as a "cold spa". we'll set up relaxation suites in the outer richmond where you can let the cold moist air replenish your skin and re-hydrate your liver. just like TB victims of yore traveled to the southwest for its dry air, the modern set will flock to the sunset for its magnificent rejuvenate effects.

I brought gretchen out to meet steve and kristen. Chris brought his friend Sebastian, who we had all independently noticed hanging down in glen park on our way in.

I realized that all my friends smoke. i don't know when it came back into fashion. but we are all dedicated in our own ways. of course, i only smoke when i drink, but that seems to be a lot lately. Sebastian out smoked us all with his pipe and tobacco. Smelling the open tobacco tin actually made my mouth water. strange how non-food items can do that.

... and then Ryoko

What finally drove us from the warmth of the Elks bar was the need for food. None of us had eaten since noon, music and friends can only carry you so far.
Avery steered us over to Ryoko which was miraculously still serving at well past 1. The sake and sushi hit the spot.
I shot some of the dishes, but got too excited by the food and forgot about taking pictures. The okra tempura was especially nice.
And then it was home to bed.
