save the waves film festival

Spent Friday night shooting the Save the Waves Film Festival benefit. Josh and his cohorts organized a really nice event. The sell out crowd was in a great mood, with smiles all around. Lots of familiar faces, I was happy to help. Become a friend -> http://www.facebook.com/savethewavescoalition and visit http://www.savethewaves.org/

"All points South" was well put together. "The Devil's Teeth" was a nice break from the norm. Interesting use of b roll and voice over from the protagonist. "Lost prophets" was well shot and produced. Containing all the necessary elements of modern surf porn. Well lit waves, interesting locations, coool characters, nice use of focus and depth of field, good soundtrack, old school voice over. But surf porn all the same. Lewis demanded more surfing! Talked to Nathan after the event. He shot the film over a year, making surgical strikes to locations between paying gigs. Edited on Final Cut Pro!

The raffle was hilarious, the girl who won the surfboard was so excited. The headliner, "The Cove", was well told and not as gruesome as I had thought it would be. I would have liked to hear more from Paul Watson and the sea shepherds. Ramming boats and general piracy in the name of the animals sounds so much more exciting.

canteen

Walked across the street for dinner at Canteen (on Sutter). Lobster Bisque was sublime. Fish was normal, Foul was nicely crisped.
The Souffle was the standout, we thought we didn't want desert, but Dennis had started one for us earlier, and when it came it was literally bliss. I was stopped in thought and immersed in the taste and texture of the vanilla scented delight. Or maybe I just needed some sleep.

black on black

Went by the mi Concept at 808 Sutter for the launch of their latest clothing line. Nellie called me on a whim and I said why not? Everybody wore black, the entire line was black. Witness Jessica modeling a form fitting number in, black. I either didn't get the message, or chose to ignore it. Arrived in paul smith orange and a brown blazer over blue jeans. Drank black drinks (blackberry vodka and black currant over ice) and hung out with Lewis, a colorfully dressed black man who made me feel like I wasn't the only rebel in the crowd.
The gallery next door was also having an opening, cool found jewelry from the 70's. And the women were not wearing black.

santa cruz

On a whim, took the boys down to see the finals of the cold water classic. The waves were big and fat on the high tide. Lots of paddling around, local knowledge was important, as was luck. As a result the surfing was not that interesting.
Got bored and split after a while, walked down to the boardwalk where adrian was just tall enough to ride the bumper cars! Eventually Enzo got up enough nerve to ride the roller coaster.
Surfed at dusk, got great waves on the lower tide, jumped off the point, rode inside walls to the stairs, hopped out and ran back up to the point 5 or 6 times times. Local knowledge.
Met GK, Pascal and Carol for drinks at the Dream Inn. Followed by dinner at Omei. Just like old times.

sssssnake.

Chris found a baby california gopher snake in the field. The kids spent the afternoon trying to figure out how to house it and what to feed it, before the adults decided that it was important that it live free.
Though small, the snake was incredibly aggressive, it was obviously king in its domain, and was not shy about letting us know, hissing and posing at whatever came near. When Chris released it the next day it bit him. A moment which Chris relished. We'd never seen him so excited, he wanted to know if the mark would be permanent.

Over the Rhine.

I think it's good?
A little Nancy Sinatra. You are desperate for love.
And then what's his name, the guy, tells us his life story. I went for a drink and talked to the bartender and got his life story. Came back, and the guy on stage had not finished describing his family tree. Went and looked at the merchandise and talked to the vendors and he finally segued into a piano tune.
One more from the hot chick followed by a drum and base solo of grateful dead proportions, hooted on by romantics cuddled aside their tables.
The drum solo is getting kind of rocking. Those in the front are clapping. And here's the hot chick again.
She sings her torch song and now she's talking and telling us about her blue liquor adolesence. But the song that follows is about Ohio. Love the way that state sounds. And the song is nice.
Whoever did the sound for this show was awesome. Ryan, take note.
Met Mateo. He was working the door.
That song reminded me of a Bulgarian songstress I once knew.
The Album autobiography was a pretty cool production. Music and soft photos of the two of them.
Breaking news. They have a Christmas record(s). Close with Redemption song.

hot dog!

Watched Warren Miller's Children of Winter just to make sure I was good and snow crazy. The Gerry Lopez segment cut to Hot Chip's "Ready for the Floor" put me in the mood. I'm going to load my iphone with an airy electronica playlist in preparation for that blissful powder day that awaits. The Silverton segment was definitely the most inspiring, maybe because I'd already seen Micah and Desi's footage from Cordova, AK.

I probably sent this clip out same time last year when I got all excited about snow, but its such a goody that it deserves to be repeated. Spyder says "Squaw valley ehhh?".

NOAA: El Niño to Help Steer U.S. Winter Weather

all of a sudden I'm psyched on snow. Forget that epic surf we had last week, its all about the white stuff. I'm already planning for waist deep powder and lots of it. Maybe it was that early winter storm that swept through a couple weeks ago, or the El Nino forecasts, or just wishful thinking, but I can't wait. Ordered some new boards from Desi at Entropy, their Dokas, 130mm at the waist, mounted with some Baron AT bindings. Hey, why not dream a little? Its all aspirational anyway.

here's the NOAA forecast. pray for snow, and lots of it. If all else fails there's always Chile.
